“We love the peace of the water and the hunt for the rocks. We never know what we might find and it’s exhilarating!”

Welcome! We are David and Janine, the two school teachers behind Great Lakes Rock Hounds. It is our passion for nature and everything it offers that inspires our mission to learn and share all about the geological wonder that is planet Earth.

Our Story

Moving to the Great Lakes area in 2018, we became enamored by how beautiful it is in this area. We started beach-hunting soon after arriving and haven’t stopped since. Having seen some videos about Yooperlites, we quickly purchased a good UV light, and started night hunting. This opened up a whole new experience. We realized that many things fluoresce under UV light, not only the “Yoopers” as we call them. We love finding fossils and other curiosities, mainly near the beaches. The information and Yooperlites are shared with our students and other educators who love rockhounding. We love the Lord our Creator and want to show that he designed a beautiful, unique planet with many mysteries—a planet we must take care of. Nature “ROCKS!”

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
