What is a Yooperlite?

(also known as emberlite, sodalite, or glow rock)

A Yooperlite is a type of rock with clusters or veins of a mineral called sodalite throughout. The sodalite fluoresces under specific types of filtered UV light creating a variety of patterns. Yooperlites come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in the Great Lakes region of North America.

 FAQs

  • We prefer to use the Convoy C-8 365nm long wave filtered UV flashlight.

Check out our recent blog post for a more detailed review and our shop to purchase one.

  • Your choice of flashlight will affect the outcome of your experience.

The fluorescence of Yooperlites cannot be seen with a regular flashlight.

Similarly, common “black lights” or UV lights that provide a more purple-toned light—usually listed as 395nm—will not show the same fluorescence in the rocks as the 365nm variation will.

  • Yooperlites can be found in the Great Lakes areas of North America.

  • The stone was named and first found by Eric Rintamaki in 2017. Sodalite had never been known to exist in Michigan before Eric’s discovery. Because of Rintamaki, sodalite was put into the queue of minerals found in Michigan.

  • If you live in the Great Lakes region and have the appropriate type of UV light, finding Yooperlites is a fairly simple process. Look for rocky beaches in your area, as those will provide the best chance for finding these elusive stones. At dusk/dark, carefully stroll along the beach, passing your light across the ground and looking for any orange-tinted glimmers. That’s really all there is to it, but that doesn’t make this an easy process! Sometimes you may find two or three in one night, but other times it might just be an opportunity to take a nice walk. Don’t give up, though! These little treasures are worth the hunt.
